Things I Enjoy in the Summer, in no particular order

A new acquisition from ze library.  A Lebanese, Turkish, and Moroccan cookbook.

Man oh man, I love to cook.  Currently I'm on a Moroccan cooking kick resulting in my first kitchen purchase in ages.....the tagine (pictured below).  It's like a slow cooker for the top of the stove or in the oven, and it's used for the most delectable stews I've ever had.

A messy kitchen (!) makes it onto my happiness list for this reason: It's messy because I love to cook for people.  End of story.

Kailina just returned from Nepal with a box of henna, which they used to tell stories from the New Testament at a Nepalese women's retreat.  So she indulged me and a couple of other friends after I treated them to a grand Moroccan feast on my coffee table last week.

My killer henna tattoo...(for at least two weeks anyways).

Sunshine in the Gorge!

Quickest way to my heart is through a dynamite latte.  *sigh*  That's because I have a ridiculous love affair with coffee foam.

Wow.  Looks like I really let myself go during finals week back in May...

I love coffee and long conversations with good friends....

Danielle knitted a beard and started a Women's Fake Beard Society, of which I am a proud member.

Went for a long walk this week.  Old school.  Van Morrison, live in 1973.  Now what would this list be without some good tunes? Worthless, that's what.

Coffee with Laurie at River Maiden...

There are other things of which I have no photos for.  Like Heather's homemade strawberry ice cream, for one.  I also may or may not have a crush on Gordon Ramsay.  Why I'm so engrossed in his Kitchen Nightmare show I'll never know.  What a train wreck!  We're right in the middle of getting ready to move back to Idaho in two weeks, so with things to do stacking up quickly, I find myself taking great pleasure in so many simple things, great food, bad tv shows, and good friends.

The other day I read something that said that small souls chase after small things and think they are grand.  Is that true?  I initially agreed but often sound bites like that fuel condescension toward others.  Thoughts like, "Thank God I'm too deep to get excited about something like coffee or a fake beard," are a cheap way (at least in my mind) of measuring another's place on the deep-thoughts-scale.  I have to wonder if the difference between being superficial or substantial is not necessarily found in what one takes pleasure in but rather in what said pleasure produces or affects in a person.  And that's what the author was actually getting at, but it took me awhile to realize it.

I enjoy all sorts of simple things, but the truth is that I often feel like God is waiting for me in the most mundane and unusual places and people.  I know it when it happens.  I do something I've done a thousand times over and then suddenly it's as if I've never done that thing or read that statement before.  It happens with unlikely people too.  Just when I think I've gotten someone figured out, something catches me completely off guard, and it's like I've never even noticed that person before.  I'm humbled and reminded that in all my knowing, there is still much left to discover.

Potterfest: Ghetto Witches and the Gangsta Snitch

My friends and I attended the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.  Beforehand we hosted a little dinner party.  There were costumes, food, drinks, and we all watched HP 7.1 together before heading out to Bridgeport.

Check our lovely spread, complete with a cauldron punch bowl.

We, of course, traveled by floo powder...

Ode to Professor Umbridge....

Luna Lovegood arrived with flare.  Check out those sweet shades for the movie in 3D.  (Luna refused to give them back after the show.)

Professor Trelawney stopped by for a few doomsday predictions.

Yo.  Gangsta Snitch also zoomed by the party.  Luckily our photographer was quick enough to snap this sweet shot.

Watching HP 7.1.  Awwww......sweet little golden Snitchy Poo.  So tired and cuddly.

Getting in line at Bridgeport for the movie...

Part of our crew...

Lots and lots of people waiting in line for the numerous midnight showings.  All the midnight showings sold out a month ago.

Everyone was divided up into different lines based on the screening they purchased tickets to.

One of my best buds....

We made it inside, and now we're waiting for the show to start.  A witch came out with a microphone and conducted a intense round of Potter trivia in the theater before the previews started.  Fun times.

Methinks Rainie looks super cute wearing my lion hat.

The Snitch (affectionately referred to as "Snitchy") even scored a good seat...in the cup holder.  Perfect placement.

What else can I say?  This little shindig was completely nerdtastic!!

Option #3: Ode to Luna

Went with option #3 for the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2, which I may or may not discuss later.  In short, I had such a marvelous time with friends and the movie was a satisfyingly fun conclusion to the saga (at least it was for me anyways).

For now, here is my ode to Luna and her marvelous Lion Hat (pictured below; photo taken from photobucket).

First, I went to Goodwill and purchased two items.  Item number one quickly lost its widdle head.

Awwww, item number two -- the Lion.

Little lion was decapitated and defaced.

I sewed the lion face onto the bear head because the bear was the biggest stuffed animal head I could find.  I pulled out the stuffing and it made a nice cap for my head.  Admittedly the bear ears with the lion face look slightly comical.

And now for the fun part.  Anna and I raided the Michael's ribbon clearance bin and found all sorts of fun embellishments.  I sticthed them all over the back of the head to create the wildly elaborate mane.  How long did it take me?  Two and a half movies.  Not bad, eh?

And yes, I do have pictures of me in the hat, which I will post later....

Burgers, Friends, and a Backyard Movie

Last weekend we hosted a cookout and a backyard movie for some friends of ours.  I have a few friends who were heading to the Middle East to work in a refugee camp, so this was our sending off party you could say.

Love seeing my backyard full of friends!

Bruce, the Grill Master...

Setting up the screen for the movie...  If you look close, you'll notice Bruce's big helper (or at least the top of his head) standing right next to Bruce in front of the ladder.
Some of my sweet friends...

Telling stories and getting settled in for the show...

Now we're just waiting for it to get darker.

Ah yes!!  Can you guess what we're watching?
